Dr Simon Dean has been designing and manufacturing optoelectronics devices for the ophthalmic field since 2001. He is a qualified ophthalmic surgeon, holds a masters degree in cataract and refractive surgery, and holds fellowship of both the Royal Australian and New Zealand college of Ophthalmologists, and the British Contact Lens Association. He is active in research with numerous publications, and the lead optics examiner for RANZCO responsible for maintaining core optics knowledge for training eye surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.

Devices he has designed and manufactured include harnessing fluorescence to image the anterior structures of the eye and lid (meibographer), a Non-contact corneal aesthesiometer to objectively measure corneal sensitivity (NCCA) with additional cooling function to selectively target specific neural pathways, a Corneal Collagen Crosslinking device to prevent progression of keratoconus in young patients, and he invented, designed and built the PhotonUVC device for treatment of corneal infections with light rather than antibiotics. Photon Therapeutics, the company he co-founded was awarded the ASCRS winning pitch challenge prize 2020 for this promising tech.
